Founded in 1952, Norwood School is a coeducational, independent day school with approximately 450 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sits on 38 beautiful and expansive acres in Bethesda, Maryland, less than six miles from Washington, D.C. As one of the finest PK-8 schools in the country, Norwood sets the bar high and is committed to educating the whole child in a student-centered, challenging, and nurturing environment. We are a diverse and inclusive community where the voice of every student is heard and where adults model a love for learning.
Norwood has an opening for an experienced, dynamic middle school choir teacher beginning in the 2018-2019 academic year. Norwood middle school encompasses fifth grade through eighth grade. Middle school students all take an ensemble class, choosing from choir, band, and string orchestra in fifth and sixth grades, and then from choir, band, and string orchestra in seventh and eighth grades. The music teachers work closely together to teach general music skills and concepts to all students while also specializing in the skills and techniques associated with each ensemble. Ensembles perform in concerts three times each year, plus any additional performances teachers pursue. The choir teacher also plays music for our morning program and works with the drama teacher to produce the annual seventh- and eighth-grade spring musical.
Applicants for the middle school choir position must have at least three years of experience working with students in upper elementary and/or middle school grades. Strong applicants will have taught middle school choir and will have a demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse, inclusive school setting with a child-centered pedagogy. Additional qualifications include excellent communication skills, flexibility, sense of humor, and a love for working with children.
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to Michele Claeys, Head of Middle School, at email@example.com. No phone calls, please.
