Holton-Arms School, an independent day school for girls in Bethesda Maryland, seeks a part time (75%) Guidance Counselor for its Lower School, grades 3-6 from September 11, 2017 through December 15, 2017. The Guidance Counselor is part of the Lower School Administrative Team and works with the LS Director and the Learning Specialist. Qualified candidates will be knowledgeable about current research relevant to the social emotional needs and methods of support of elementary school aged students, and in particular, the needs of girls. Candidates for this position should possess a Master’s Degree in counseling or equivalent, be familiar with independent school education, and have significant experience in addressing the psychological, social, and emotional issues that affect elementary aged girls. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, experience with Responsive Classroom and school advisory programs, possess a strong background in school counseling, work effectively with both students and adults, and be a team player.
The Lower School Guidance Counselor will:
Counsel individuals and small groups of children through the development of educational, personal and social skills. Topics may include family issues, general childhood anxiety issues, child abuse or neglect, attendance, behavioral issues, academic failure, peer and friendship problems, coping strategies, goal setting, communication skills and organizational skills.
Support school wide health and wellness initiatives and goals.
Maintain professional notes as record of work with students and parents.
Teach weekly Guidance classes to grades 3-5.
Coordinate the sixth grade advisory program.
Develop and promote wellness and wellbeing programs within Lower School.
Act as a resource for faculty, staff and parents.
Conduct or provide in-service training for faculty and staff.
Conduct or provide opportunities for parent education programs.
Refer students and their parents to special programs, specialists and outside agencies when necessary, including individual and small group counseling and individual/family/school crisis intervention.
Maintain a public presence within Lower School in classrooms, and during lunch and recess.
Contribute articles to the parent newsletter.
Review the counseling program with administrators on an annual basis.
Support the school and its leadership.
Other duties as assigned by the Lower School Director.
