Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school located in NW Washington, DC, seeks a Writer to join the Office of Communications.
The Office of Communications ensures that our community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni is informed and engaged in the life of the School. By producing compelling and vivid stories, we present the School in the most creative and effective light to support the strategic needs of the School and to celebrate the strength of our Quaker education, portraying the best of who we are and how we learn.
The Writer is a key team member who contributes to School’s digital content strategy. He/she/they do so by: 1) reporting out the news of the community on the website and social media; 2) writing in-depth stories of the people and work of our community for both the magazine and the website; and 3) supporting outreach and marketing efforts of campus partners. The successful candidate has the nose for a good story and possesses a journalist’s instinct.
The Writer works collaboratively to produce and implement communications plans in a timely fashion. The Writer is a strategic thinker and an expert content producer who is versatile enough to use multimedia skills to produce effective results that will keep the website updated and dynamic. The Writer will also have the natural curiosity to learn new skills, including those in photojournalism and video-journalism.

A bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or communications required with relevant field is required (master’s preferred) with 5 years of experience in writing and producing content.
Evening and weekend work are occasionally required. A sense of humor, a commitment to excellence, the ability to meet deadlines, and an appreciation for the Quaker values underlying the School are all desirable and appreciated. Writing samples and portfolio are required.
