Department Chairs are curricular leaders in the school and play a key role in promoting a vibrant and creative culture of teaching and learning. Central to the role of Department Chair is consistent communication with teachers, students, parents, and administrators about departmental objectives, practices, and challenges in the context of the whole school program. At The Field School, studio arts are integral to the Field curriculum and studio classes are required for every student in the school. Studio arts classes meet daily and students receive grades not only for their effort and attitude, but also for the courage and results that come through in the public exhibition of their creations. The Studio Department Chair is responsible for planning, managing and executing the twice-yearly exhibitions of the studio arts at The Field School.
The Studio Department Chair has the unique role of being a studio arts teacher as well as managing all visual and performing arts classes including: darkroom photography, theater, musical theater, ceramics and sculpture, digital imagery, yearbook, studio band, a cappella, choral music, journalism, and 2D art (including drawing, painting, printmaking and fiber arts). In addition to their chairing work, the Studio Department Chair teaches three sections in their own discipline and coaches one season of athletics.
