The Langley School, a preschool through eighth grade coeducational day school in McLean, Virginia, seeks a collaborative, passionate, experienced, child-centered educator to serve as the director of curriculum and instruction. Langley has devoted significant effort to defining its inquiry-based, student-centered approach to teaching and learning. As such, we seek a leader who not only has extensive classroom expertise, but also has experience in curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation. As a member of Langley's senior leadership team, the director of curriculum and instruction reports directly to the head of school and works closely with the assistant head of school and members of the academic leadership team. This position will contribute significantly to achieving goals of the school’s strategic plan. This is a 12-month position beginning on July 1, 2019.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate his/her ability to perform the following responsibilities:
Identify and build upon the strengths of a superb faculty to ensure high-level, inquiry-based instruction and pedagogy. The director of curriculum and instruction will oversee and coordinate Langley’s faculty feedback model to offer recommendations and professional development to strengthen the instructional practices of the faculty.
Work collaboratively with the academic leadership team and department heads to provide vision for and oversight of the development, articulation, evaluation, and alignment of the curriculum in grades preschool through 8.
Ensure Langley’s curriculum, and all related scope and sequence material, is clearly defined, reflects the school’s Arc of Development, and differentiates the school’s program within the educational market.
Support each department chair in facilitating a formal process for ongoing curricular review.
Establish key benchmark standards for the academic program of the school, as well as collect, measure, and analyze relevant data regarding the effectiveness of instructional practices.
Plan and coordinate school-wide professional development, including in-service professional development days, as well as the allocation of a robust professional development budget.
Assist the assistant head of school and division heads with hiring and onboarding new personnel.
Create and nurture a culture of reflective practice, collaboration, feedback, and professional growth and renewal.
Partner with the senior administrative team in developing the strategic vision and position of the school.
Successful instructional leadership and curriculum development experience; superior communication and organizational skills; demonstrated commitment to the academic, social, and emotional well-being of every child, every day; commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning and work environment; proven collaboration and consensus-building skills; and demonstrated leadership in the development and implementation of strategic curricular planning and execution required. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
