Founded in 1952, Norwood School is a coeducational, independent day school with approximately 450 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sits on 38 beautiful and expansive acres in Bethesda, Maryland, less than six miles from Washington, D.C. As one of the finest PK-8 schools in the country, Norwood sets the bar high and is committed to educating the whole child in a student-centered, challenging, and nurturing environment. We are a diverse and inclusive community where the voice of every student is heard and where adults model a love for learning.
Norwood School has a temporary/short term need for an experienced, dynamic lower school science/math substitute teacher beginning at mid-April 2019 until the end of the school year in early June 2019. Our science program is based on a “hands-on, minds-on” and student-centered approach. A successful candidate constructs and implements science lessons that reflect a thorough knowledge of concepts and skills associated with the study of physical, life and earth sciences—specifically for grades K-3. This position requires close collaboration with other members of the Norwood science department and lower school faculty (grades PK-4) to adjust and improve existing curriculum. The teacher also will be responsible for co-teaching one section of 3rd grade math. Collaborating with a homeroom teacher, the position will be responsible for teaching the Norwood math curriculum; our primary resource for this program is Bridges in Mathematics.
Applicants must have at least two-three years of experience either teaching science to younger elementary-aged students or working in a science field educating young children. Strong applicants will have a demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse, inclusive school setting with a child-centered pedagogy. Additional qualifications include excellent communication skills, flexibility, sense of humor, and a love for working with young children.
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to Mike Risen, Interim Head of Lower School, at email@example.com. No phone calls, please.
