Founded in 1952, Norwood School is a coeducational, independent day school with approximately 450 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sits on 38 beautiful and expansive acres in Bethesda, Maryland, less than six miles from Washington, D.C. As one of the finest PK-8 schools in the country, Norwood sets the bar high and is committed to educating the whole child in a student-centered, challenging, and nurturing environment. We are a diverse and inclusive community where the voice of every student is heard and where adults model a love for learning.
Norwood School has an opening for a half-time lower school general music and choir teacher for 3rd and 4th grades. The Kodaly-inspired program focuses on using a repertoire of multicultural folk songs to develop ever-increasing levels of musical understanding through activities involving performance, listening/analysis, and creating. The development of music literacy skills as well as individual creative expression are hallmarks of the program. Each grade level performs three times per year as part of seasonal concerts, as well as once per year in their own grade level program. Music selections for these performances reflect a truly diverse selection of age-appropriate music taken from multiple genres and styles. In 4th grade, students learn to play the recorder. This position also collaborates extensively with the K-2 music teacher, as well as with the larger performing arts department.
Applicants must have a degree in music education and more than 3 years of prior music education experience. Strong preference is given to those with Kodaly and/or ORFF training and certification. Candidates will have demonstrated experience leading chorus and leading school shows and performances. Proficiency in piano accompaniment is preferred. Strong applicants will have a demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse, inclusive school setting with a child-centered pedagogy. Additional qualifications include excellent communication skills, flexibility, sense of humor, and a love for working with young children.
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to Mike Risen, Head of Lower School, at firstname.lastname@example.org. No phone calls, please.
