Landon School seeks an Assistant Director of Communications. This position is for you if you are passionate about education, you manage projects successfully from start to finish, you have an eye for creativity with a metrics-driven mind, and you thrive on attention to the smallest detail while thinking “big” about how to share our school’s story.
Landon is an independent school for boys in grades 3–12, located on a beautiful 75-acre campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Our mission is to prepare talented boys for productive lives as accomplished, responsible, and caring men whose actions are guided by the principles of perseverance, teamwork, honor, and fair play.
Job Description
As an Assistant Director of Communications, your typical day will include working as a strategic and collaborative partner with teachers, administrators, admissions officers, and fundraisers within the school and our marketing, advertising, design, and photography partners outside of school.
As the primary visual storyteller for Landon, you play a pivotal role in telling authentic stories about the day-to-day life of students, teachers, and other members of the Landon community – from Lower School rockets to Middle School robotics, Upper School architecture classes to theater arts productions. No day is the same in this role – you capture these visuals through compelling, creative video and photography and bring these stories to life on our social media channels, website, and in other school publications. You will also work with our partners to provide written and visual content for our digital and printed promotional materials. For example, you may write news stories for our website, anchor a podcast, and help produce the Landon Magazine. You demonstrate a natural curiosity about the school’s program and community as well as trends in the education and media industries. This curiosity leads to creative thinking about how to effectively communicate and engage with internal and external audiences. You will join a team of four who is passionate about our school mission and committed to boys’ education, including a database manager and communications associate.

Desired Qualifications You are collaborative, curious, enthusiastic, and cool under pressure. You must have a keen understanding of story fundamentals including newsworthiness, authenticity, hook, and calls-to-action. You should know how to ask effective questions and develop trust with members of the school community, as well as have a well-developed eye/ear for best practices in the areas of visual, audio and content creation. We appreciate self-starters and idea-generators who are equally adept at leading and following. It is also incredibly important in this role to be detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy.
