Position Description
This opening is for a full-time 2nd - 5th grade science teaching position. This position is a science teacher’s dream vis-a-vis the opportunity to teach in nature and capitalize on a one-of-a-kind campus! The LS science teacher works closely with the classroom teachers in these grades to provide an interdisciplinary science curriculum. They also work with staff at our second campus in West Virginia, The Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies (a.k.a. The Cove), and participate in overnight class trips there during the early fall and late spring. A degree in science, elementary education or a related field is preferred. The LS science teacher reports directly to the Lower School Head.

Continue to build a science curriculum that connects with NGSS Standards, student interests, and general classroom studies
Use our two fabulous campuses with myriad opportunities for nature-based learning as a launching pad for learning
Work closely with 2nd-5th grade classroom teaching teams to plan and implement curriculum
Partner with our learning specialist to provide differentiated instruction
Participate in progressive education seminars in the first year
Be paired with a mentor/guide in the first year
Serve on cross divisional committees such as DEI, curriculum, and accreditation
Participate in regular professional development offered through the school and through off campus workshops and conferences
Duties/Responsibilities:
Teach physical, earth and biological science and demonstrate thorough planning
Maintain emphasis on preparing students for the joys and challenges of learning
Participate in curriculum development, committee and task force work
Perform necessary administrative tasks including narrative report writing and attend required meetings and events
Provide differentiated instruction designed to meet social and emotional and academic needs of children
Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity, both in teaching and in working with colleagues and families
Teach and learn in and about the outdoors
Hours:
Arrive by 8:00 a.m., depart after 3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Wednesday, when faculty meetings begin at 3:00 p.m. and end at 4:30/5:00 p.m.
The School is closed for most national holidays, as well as Winter and Spring Break.
Salary and Benefits:
Salaries are based on a competitive independent school scale with increases for advanced degrees and experience; $2000 step increase for master’s degree.
Health, dental, life insurance, and long-term disability, as well as a retirement plan, are offered to all full-time employees.
403(b) plan with TIAA, with an initial 3% match and then 6% match by the school after two years, irrespective of employee contribution.
A tuition benefit (1/2 discount) is offered for one qualified child attending Burgundy to full-time employees only. (Fac-staff children are eligible for additional financial aid also.)
