Founded in 1952, Norwood School is a coeducational, independent day school with approximately 450 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sits on 40 beautiful and expansive acres in Bethesda, Maryland, less than six miles from Washington, D.C. As one of the finest PK-8 schools in the country, Norwood sets the bar high and is committed to educating the whole child in a diverse, student-centered, challenging, and nurturing environment, which continually promotes equity, inclusion, and cultural competence.
Norwood’s child-centered education and its very intentional emphasis on being a happy place of learning create an environment where each individual child is loved, nurtured, challenged, and truly known. As a result, children flourish at Norwood. They love learning; they are creative and critical thinkers. They are confident in who they are, and they feel safe taking risks. They are kind and caring people, who, fueled by our motto, How you lead your life matters, make helping others a priority in their lives. At the end of their eighth-grade year, our graduates leave Norwood exceptionally well prepared for high school and empowered to make positive contributions to our world.
Norwood School has an opening for a full-time experienced, dynamic Middle School Choir Teacher beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. Norwood’s middle school encompasses grades 5-8. Middle school students all take an ensemble class, choosing from choir, band, and string orchestra in fifth and sixth grades, and then from men’s choir, women’s choir, handbells, band, and string orchestra in seventh and eighth grades. The music teachers work closely together to teach general music skills and concepts to all students while also specializing in the skills and techniques associated with each ensemble. Ensembles perform in concerts three times each year, plus any additional performances a teacher might pursue. The choir teacher also plays music for our morning program and works with the drama teacher to produce the annual middle school spring musical.
Applicants must have at least three years of experience working with students in upper elementary and/or middle school grades. Strong applicants will have taught middle school choir and will have a demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse, inclusive school setting with a child-centered pedagogy. Additional qualifications include excellent communication skills, flexibility, sense of humor, and a love for working with children.
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to Dennis Campbell, Head of Middle School, at dcampbell@norwoodschool.org. No phone calls, please.
