The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of Upper School STEM Teacher for the 2023-2024 academic year. The position combines teaching a range of STEM courses in the middle (6th-8th grades) and high school (9th-12th grade) divisions. Additional opportunities to sponsor STEM related or other clubs may also be available for a stipend.
The ideal candidate has two or more years of highly successful formal teaching experience and demonstrated passion for and excellence in the teaching of STEM and 21st century skills. We are particularly interested in candidates who possess an ability to teach a range of courses in the STEM field and who are passionate about working with adolescents in a school setting. The ideal candidate is creative and collaborative and has demonstrated success at and enjoys working as an active member of a team. They have a successful record of creating strong relationships with students, are deeply knowledgeable about the subject area, and have demonstrated success in integrating positive behavior management in neuro-diverse classrooms.
In addition, the ideal candidate has vast experience in developing and implementing creative, cross-cutting programming for middle and high school aged students, whether in a formal school setting or in a camp or extracurricular type program. They are highly motivated and collaborative, think big and yet are also detail oriented, and they inspire others through their passion.
Pay is commensurate with education and experience and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale.
Responsibilities:
Teach courses in Robotics, Engineering, Digital Animation, 3D Printing, and/or Coding to students in grades 6-8 and grades 9-12;
Support middle and high school STEM programming both during and outside of traditional school hours;
Participate in team meetings to review curriculum and discuss student progress;
Work collaboratively within the Upper School STEM department and middle and high school faculties;
Partner with colleagues in both middle and high school to deliver outstanding STEM programming throughout the school.
Qualifications:
The candidate must possess a BA or a BS in Engineering, Computer Science and/or a related field; MA preferred but not required.
Candidates should have at least two years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments, ideally in a middle and/or high school setting.
Experience in differentiated instruction,project-based learning, Collaborative Problem Solving, student-centered instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred. Fluency with technology required.
Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required.
Work Environment:
Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.
While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.
