Friends Community School (FCS) is a progressive co-ed Quaker K-8 day school serving a diverse student body from the greater Washington, D.C. area. Job Summary
Middle School Art Teacher will:
In keeping with progressive practice, support the academic, social, and emotional development of the whole child
Contribute to positive and professional climate of Friends Community School
Participate actively in the community
Establish working relationships that demonstrate integrity, confidentiality, respect, flexibility, fairness and trust
Be familiar with and promote Quaker processes and values
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach visual art lessons to students in grades 5-8
Perform lunch, recess, and dismissal duties several times a week
Be an advisor for a group of 11-12 students
Communicate regularly with students’ parents as necessary
Collaborate with other teachers for lesson and curriculum planning
Assess students work regularly
Participate in morning (8am), weekly faculty meetings and Meeting for Worship
Attend major school-wide events including Fall Fair and Spring Auction
Work collaboratively with colleagues to build a learning community
Embrace and promote equity and inclusion, social justice, environmental stewardship, and peaceful conflict resolution, in line with the school’s values
Other duties as assigned
Qualification Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in visual arts
Previous experience teaching art to middle school students
Exceptional written and oral communication skills
Experience working with technology such as the Google suite
Professional development in diversity, equity, and inclusion or multicultural education and experience working with a diverse population of children and adults
Experience or openness to working in a Quaker organization or faith-based community
Strong EQ and ability to form strong and trusting relationships with adults and children
Possess joy, a growth mindset, and a sense of humor
