The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of High School Counselor for the 2023-2024 academic year. Counselors work with faculty, family and outside providers to determine student needs, facilitate communication, and recommend how to best support students in the classroom. The individual oversees the emotional, social, and behavioral health and well-being of individual students in the High School. They will join an existing team to ensure that the School meets the needs of the student body and addresses the collective wellness objectives of the community.
Responsibilities:
Provide short-term individual counseling, crisis intervention, and social/emotional support.
Establish relationships with students and serve as a case manager and consultant to support parents, teachers, learning specialists, ESOL specialists, outside professionals and administration regarding strategies to assist students.
Help students resolve teacher and classroom concerns and assist students in developing advocacy and problem solving skills.
Advise and support the Directors of Wellness in their work integrating social-emotional/values based programming into the Upper School.
Assist new students and their families as they integrate into the School community.
Make recommendations for outside mental health support.

Qualities of a CESJDS Counselor:
Have an appreciation and respect for high school-aged students as learners and diverse individuals, through challenging and joyful moments alike.
Be a proven collaborator and strong communicator who can work with all internal and external members of the community.
Show an ability to maintain accurate, detailed records and to maintain confidentiality.
Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills.
Be able to prioritize and show flexibility.
Qualifications:
Masters Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related mental health field required.
Minimum of five years of related professional experience working clinically with students.
Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.
