Sheridan School, an independent K-8 school in Washington, D.C., is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, student-centered middle school science teacher who loves science and wants to positively impact the lives of young people through science education. The science teacher is responsible for effectively collaborating to create a nurturing educational environment, delivering high-quality instruction, and supporting the social-emotional growth of students.

The individual who fills this role will: 

• Provide a progressive, concept-based, rigorous science curriculum to students in Grades 6-8.
• Assess and adapt the science curriculum to meet needs of students and classes in a flexible and responsive manner.
• Employ instructional strategies that reflect the variety of student learning styles.
• Use a variety of assessment techniques to track student progress
• Serve as an advisor in the Middle School advisory program
• Work collaboratively with the student support team on issues related to student growth and support
• Create an environment that ensures equitable and respectful care and support for students with diverse beliefs and practices and varied backgrounds
• Actively participate in Mountain Campus trips, Admissions, and other important facets of the school

The successful candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field, 3-5 years of teaching experience in a similar role,  a proven ability to establish supportive relationships with all school constituencies, strong communication and writing skills, and knowledge of developmental stages of students in 6th-8th grade.

About Sheridan School

Sheridan is an independent, co-educational, K-8 school located in northwest Washington, DC. We offer a progressive, concept-based, social justice-oriented curriculum. Grades K-4 have two co-teachers in each homeroom and between 24-27 students per grade. Departmental classes such as art, music and science are taught in smaller sections outside of the homeroom by content specialists. Our program for Grades 5-8 is grounded in an advisory model and may have up to 30 student in each grade who meet in smaller groups for academic subjects.
