The Director of Athletics is responsible for the planning and management of the Academy of the Holy Cross (AHC) athletic program.
The Academy of the Holy Cross, a Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Cross since 1868, is dedicated to educating young women in a Christ-centered community which values diversity. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Administration
Define and manage the AHC athletic programs and activities, working with the President in effectively implementing and reviewing them on a continuous basis
Oversee and review the scheduling of all athletic activities and events to avoid conflicts in the use of sports, school program, transportation, facilities and testing dates
Establish the physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport, and verify each athlete's eligibility with the Principal
Participate in curriculum development and the formation of goals and objectives in health and physical education
Coordinate the completion of medical exams for athletes, insurance data, parental consent forms, etc.; report this information to the Principal
In collaboration with Program Heads and parents, maintain a written roster of student athlete injuries
Uphold and enforce AHC and athletic program policies and regulations
Personnel Management
Recruit, select, train and supervise all coaches and athletic trainers and make sound recommendations to President about personal placement, assignments, retention, discipline and dismissal
Supervise and evaluate athletic personnel; establish coaching expectations
Recruit, select and supervise game officials
Consistent communication with all coaches and staff within the Athletic Department
Student Management
Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students and faculty regarding vital issues
Implement student management policies; communicate expected student behavior related to athletics; and ensure enforcement of student discipline in accordance with student Code of Conduct and student handbook
Assist in the oversight of the Booster Club
Financial Management
Prepare and administer athletic budget
Initiate purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and policies
Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs
Ensure payment of game officials for home competitive events
Submit request for coaching stipends for each season
Facilities and Equipment Management
Work cooperatively with Director of Finance/Facilities to maintain upkeep of athletic facilities and grounds, such as repair/painting of buildings, maintenance of grass/round, etc.
Requisition and purchase necessary athletic equipment and supplies as approved by the President
Manage the storage, distribution, security, cleaning and repair of athletic equipment
Maintain a property inventory of all material and equipment assigned to the athletic department
Supervise athletic facilities
Coordinate the scheduling of the athletic facilities
Community Relations
Work cooperatively with the Director of Communication to publicize and market AHC athletic program
Distribute sport schedules and results to the media and general public
Athletic Events
Attend most school athletic events and provide direct supervision during athletic contests in cooperation with school administration
Ensure preparation of athletic facilities and grounds for practices and athletic events
Coordinate transportation, lodging and meals arrangements for out-of-town athletic games
Secure adequate personnel for the operation of athletic events, such as ticket sellers, police officers, game officials, etc.
Plan, organize and supervise all athletic awards programs to include Signing Day, Pep Rallies, and Athletic Hall of Fame
Other
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal and/or President
Work work parents, coaches, Business Manager, President and Principal to plan/coordinate senior nights
Assist coaches in planning, scheduling, and operating summer camps in coordination with the Business Office
Oversee all logistics of any overnight trips, in coordination with the Head Coach, Business Manager, and Head of School
Collaborate with Admissions to prepare and plan for Open House. Inform coaches of attendance at this event.
Oversee annual scheduling of CPR class for coaches and staff
Post-graduate degree or coursework in administration, athletics or related field
Bachelor's degree
Must have 7 years of coaching/teaching experience
Must have 5 years supervisory experience in school athletic functions
Must have demonstrated experience in program planning, budgeting and implementation
Must have extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, rules and procedures of organized competitive sports and athletic and recreational activity programs
Must have thorough knowledge of state and local policies governing athletics
Must have leadership/coaching techniques/skills
Must have superior organizational and planning skills
Must be able to maintain cooperative, positive working relationships with staff, students, parents, various vendors, other personnel involved in school athletics and the general public
Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
Must be able to perform CPR and administer general first aid
The Academy of the Holy Cross, is a private, Catholic high school (grades 9 - 12) for young women located in Kensington, MD. The college preparatory program reflects a holistic approach to education by fostering the intellectual, physical and moral development of the students. The school is sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross and has been in continuous operation in the Archdiocese since 1868.
