Landon seeks a creative, strategic, and thoughtful Associate Director of College Counseling to collaborate with juniors and seniors and their families through every phase of the college admissions process. The expected start date for this position is January 2024.
Responsibilities:
- Advise and support students and families; conduct individual and family meetings, counsel students and their parents throughout the entire admission process.
- Write individualized letters for students highlighting their academic, extracurricular, and personal strengths; advise students on supplemental application materials, i.e., artistic submissions.
- Meet with college admissions representatives who visit campus.
- Work with colleagues to strategically assess and compile the annual school profile.
- Travel to colleges, universities, and professional meetings, look for opportunities for continued outreach with college admissions representatives and update them about significant aspects of the School’s curriculum and extracurricular program.
- Arrange auxiliary programs such as on-campus college night programs, financial aid presentations, recommendation letter workshops for teachers, essay workshops, and case study programs, host open office hours for parents and Landon teachers.
- Conduct classes for students on essay writing, interviewing, and resume writing.
- Represent Landon at various Admissions events and in organizations including ACCIS, WAIS, PCACAC, and NACAC.
- Participate in professional conferences and other professional development opportunities as appropriate.
- Plan local WAIS college fairs with colleagues from nearby schools.
- Become involved with the life of the Upper School beyond college guidance as appropriate by advising, teaching and /or coaching.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) and at least 3 years of related experience in college admissions and/or independent school college counseling.
- A high level of competence using technology, including SCOIR.
- Excellent organization, time management, and communication skills (both written and oral).
- Strong ability to listen, reflect, and connect with students.
- Capability to maintain accurate records for admissions decisions and statistics.
- Ability to be empathetic to the needs of students and their parents even in difficult situations.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
This position may involve working outside of normal school hours.
