About the School: The Lab School of Washington works with students entering grades 1–12 who have been diagnosed with a language-based learning difference such as dyslexia, or a specific learning difference in reading, math, or writing. Many of our students also benefit from our focused work on executive functioning skills. Some of our students may have a secondary diagnosis of ADHD. A Lab education focuses on students' strengths, interests, and passions and provides an experiential and multi-sensory approach to learning. The majority of Lab;s graduating seniors move directly to college.

About the Position: The Lab School of Washington seeks a dynamic and creative Technical Theatre Teacher and After School Technical Theatre Director for the 2026-2027 academic year. The ideal candidate has experience in the areas of lighting, set, and sound design, production management, and arts education. The focus of both the class and the after-school program is designing and producing all technical elements of the Upper School Drama Club productions, as well as supporting performances in all three divisions of the school, Lower, Middle, and Upper. Candidates should prepare a portfolio of their design work for both professional and educational theatre.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Teaching technical theatre classes in the Middle School and Upper School
Overseeing the daily after school technical theatre program for Upper School students
Supporting the technical needs of Drama Club productions as well as shows for the Lower, Middle, and Upper School divisions
Designing and running the technical elements for all events in the theater, including school assemblies, awards ceremonies, and meetings
Maintaining the physical plant of the theater

Qualifications & Skills:
Professional experience working in the theatre arts, stage management, or a related field
Experience working in a school setting and/or educational theatre a plus
Experience operating/programming audio, projection, and sound equipment
Sound and Lighting boards (e.g.: ETC, Ion, Sound craft)
Touch control boards (e.g.: Crestron, QSC)
Ability to teach technical theater courses in Upper School and Middle School
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders and scaffolding
Ability to multitask during high visibility events such as board meetings, assemblies, and performances
Well-demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Flexible schedule to accommodate after school rehearsals and performances.
Ideally, the candidate will have teaching certification in the District of Columbia, or be eligible and/or willing, with support, to complete the requirements for this certification.
Resourceful, flexible, collaborative, and service oriented
Physical Demands: Ability to lift and transport materials and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Frequent walking, reaching, and bending. Fine motor skills and steady hands.
Work Environment: The daily work environment is characteristic of a school setting, where noise levels can shift quickly from quiet clinical spaces to busy, high-activity areas. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced atmosphere, managing frequent transitions throughout the day, and maintaining professional focus despite common classroom distractions. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
