Lowell School, a progressive school of approximately 300 students in NW Washington, DC, seeks a Middle School Music and Theater Production Teacher. The Music and Theater Production Teacher reports to the Director of Middle School and is a member of the Middle School Division. This educator will lead instrumental music instruction, direct ensembles, and oversee student theater productions while fostering a creative, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for middle school students.
Education and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree or higher in elementary education or a related field, master’s degree preferred.
A minimum of 1 to 3 years of teaching experience.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of the social, emotional, and academic needs of adolescent-age students.
Demonstrated evidence of the ability to select skill-appropriate repertoire, lead ensembles, and execute performances for band ensembles.
Ability to teach and manage both small and large groups with varied skill levels.
Ability to arrange ensemble music.
Strong instructional and classroom management skills in performing arts.
Demonstrated proficiency in theater production, including technical elements such as lighting, sound, and set design.
Understanding of the developmental and social-emotional needs of middle school students.
Ability to foster a safe and inclusive learning environment that promotes respect, equity, and cultural competency.
Enthusiasm for music and theater arts, with the ability to create engaging learning experiences.
Ability to develop cross-disciplinary learning opportunities and collaborate with faculty across departments.
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in arts education.
Demonstrated ability to build relationships with arts organizations and community partners in the region.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage schedules, resources, and performance logistics.
Familiarity with progressive education and advisory-based models preferred.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Teach three sections of instrumental music for students in grades 6–8.
Teach a middle school elective and collaborate with peers on a project-based learning course.
Direct instrumental ensembles and coordinate performances throughout the school year.
Direct student theater productions, including plays, showcases, and community events.
Manage all aspects of theater production, including casting, rehearsals, stage direction, set design, costumes, lighting, and sound.
Oversee scheduling and usage of theater spaces and coordinate with faculty and staff on performance logistics.
Maintain theater equipment, props, and supplies to ensure a safe and functional environment.
Collaborate with faculty and administrators on cross-disciplinary projects and arts programming.
Participate in grade-level and department meetings.
Chaperone the annual middle school multi-day capstone trip.
Assess student achievement and skill development regularly and maintain accurate records of grades and attendance.
Communicate regularly with students and families regarding progress, performances, and opportunities.
Participate in ongoing professional development aligned with schoolwide initiatives.
Contribute to the broader life of the school community, including some evening and weekend performances and events.
Serve as a student advisor.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Middle School.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to hear and speak to communicate in person and via phone, and see to read materials and communicate in writing.
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and move around classrooms and performance spaces.
Regularly required to bend, twist, walk, kneel, stoop, and sit on chairs or the floor while working with students.
Occasionally required to lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 40–60 pounds (e.g., instruments, stage equipment, or materials).
Must be able to grasp, handle, and manipulate teaching and production materials.
Must be able to see both close up and at a distance, adjust focus, and use peripheral vision.

The Expected Salary Range: $70,000 – $110,000
